A Brief Discussion of the Eight Major Applications of Mixed Gas

In March, the average price of liquid oxygen in China was RMB 401 per tonne, up 14.57% month-on-month but down 13.58% year-on-year. On the supply side, Longzhong Data’s survey of more than 240 domestic producers showed total liquid-oxygen output of about 510,000 tonnes, a 4% increase from the previous month.

(1) Laser gas mixtures: Common laser gas mixtures include helium–neon laser mixtures, carbon dioxide laser mixtures, krypton–fluorine laser mixtures, sealed-beam laser mixtures, and excimer laser mixtures.

(2) Mixed gases for special instruments: Common mixed gases used in special instruments include PR gas (P-10 gas), Q quenching gas, Geiger gas, tissue-equivalent gas, gases for nuclear radiation counters, gases for proportional counters, electron-capture mixed gases, FID combustion gases, spark-chamber mixed gases, spectroscopic mixed gases, and carrier gases for chromatographs.

(3) Welding shielding gases: Industrially used welding shielding gases can generally be classified into three categories: binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and quaternary mixtures. Common binary mixtures include Ar–He, Ar–N2, Ar–H2, Ar–O2, Ar–CO2, N2–H2, and CO2–O2; common ternary mixtures include Ar–He–N2, Ar–He–N2, Ar–He–O2, and Ar–CO2–O2; quaternary mixtures are used less frequently and are typically formulated from Ar, He, H2, O2, N2, CO2, and other components.

(4) Mixed gases for electric light sources: Primarily used as filling gases for incandescent lamps and special-light-source lamps (such as infrared lamps, high-intensity floodlights, fluorescent lamps, luminous signaling lamps, solar lamps, ozone lamps, photochemical lamps, sterilization lamps, ultraviolet lamps, glow lamps, zirconium-arc lamps, halogen-gas illumination lamps, etc.) as well as for digital display tubes. Common types are classified according to their characteristics into rare-gas mixtures, deuterium mixtures, and argon mixtures for lamps. To extend the service life of lighting fixtures, the purity of the individual pure gases used in preparing these mixed gases is generally required to be greater than 99.99%, and the content of oxidizing impurities must be strictly controlled.

(5) Leak-detection (alarm) mixtures: These are special mixtures used for leak detection and come in a wide variety of types and specifications. Common examples include helium, halocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride, and krypton-85.

(6) Standard calibration gas: Applications of standard calibration gas:

1. Applications in gas standardization research;

2. Applications in gas product quality supervision and quality control;

3. Calibration and scaling of instruments and meters;

4. Atmospheric environmental monitoring is inseparable from standard calibration gases;

5. Applications in healthcare and clinical laboratory testing;

6. In the evaluation of analytical methods.

(7) Breathing Mixed Gas: An oxygen–helium (or oxygen–neon) mixture composed of 1% to 20% O₂ combined with helium or neon, primarily used as artificial breathing gas in deep-sea diving operations and spaceflight to supply divers and astronauts with breathable air. In addition, this type of mixed gas can be employed in the treatment of patients with respiratory disorders such as asthma, laryngeal diseases, pneumothorax, and pulmonary diseases, and may also be utilized for hyperbaric therapy in general patients.

(8) Mixed Gases for the Electronics Industry: Mixed gases for the electronics industry refer to a class of specialized electronic-grade mixed gases used in processes such as vapor-phase epitaxial growth, chemical vapor deposition, doping, etching, and ion implantation during the fabrication of large-scale integrated circuits (LSI), very-large-scale integrated circuits (VLSI), and semiconductor devices. These include epitaxial (growth) mixtures, chemical vapor deposition mixtures, doping mixtures, etching mixtures, and other electronic-grade mixtures.
