Summary:

Deuterium is a heavier, stable isotope of ordinary hydrogen. It is a colorless, odorless, non‑toxic flammable gas with a boiling point of −249.5°C. Like molecular hydrogen, the diatomic deuterium molecule also exhibits ortho–para isomerism. At room temperature, the equilibrium composition of the ortho–para deuterium mixture is 2:1; this form of deuterium is referred to as “normal deuterium.” Lowering the temperature favors the conversion to ortho‑deuterium. At 20.4 K, the equilibrium mixture contains 97.8% ortho‑deuterium; at this temperature, the deuterium is known as “equilibrium deuterium.” In the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, compounds containing heavy hydrogen are produced. Trace amounts of these molecules can be used to study reaction rates and reaction mechanisms. In the electronics industry—particularly in semiconductor manufacturing, flat-panel display production, and solar cell fabrication—hydrogen is replaced during silicon sintering or annealing processes. It is applied in nuclear fusion reactions.
