VI. Applications of Methane Gas
Methane is a highly important fuel and the primary component of natural gas, accounting for approximately 87%. At room temperature under standard atmospheric pressure, methane is colorless and odorless; the distinctive smell added to household natural gas is an artificial odor introduced for safety purposes, typically using methyl mercaptan or ethyl mercaptan. Under ambient conditions at one atmosphere of pressure, what is the boiling point of methane? It is −161°C. When the concentration of methane in air exceeds just 5%–15%, it becomes highly flammable. Liquid methane does not burn unless it is subjected to high-pressure conditions—typically around 4–5 atmospheres of pressure. According to Chinese national standards, methane gas cylinders are designated as brown with white lettering, as compiled by Medical Education | Net.
High‑temperature decomposition of methane yields carbon black, which is used as a pigment, inks, paints, and an additive for rubber, among other applications. Chloroform and CCl₄ are both important solvents. Methane is widely distributed in nature and constitutes one of the primary components of natural gas, marsh gas, and mine gas. It can be used as a fuel and as a feedstock for producing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon black, acetylene, hydrogen cyanide, and formaldehyde, among other substances. Methane serves as a standard fuel for testing the calorific value of water heaters and gas stoves, as well as a standard gas and calibration gas for manufacturing combustible gas detectors. It can also be employed as a carbon source in the vapor‑phase chemical deposition of amorphous silicon films for solar cells, and as a raw material in pharmaceutical and chemical synthesis processes.
7. Important Notes:
Transportation Precautions: When transporting in steel cylinders, be sure to securely fasten the safety caps on the cylinders. Cylinders should generally be laid flat with their valve outlets facing the same direction—never crossed—and must not exceed the height of the vehicle’s protective guardrails. Use triangular wooden chocks to secure the cylinders firmly and prevent them from rolling. The transport vehicle must be equipped with appropriate types and quantities of fire‑fighting equipment. The exhaust pipe of any vehicle used to transport this material must be fitted with a flame arrester, and the use of mechanical equipment or tools that are prone to sparking during loading and unloading is strictly prohibited. Mixing or transporting together with oxidizing agents is strictly forbidden. During summer, transport should be carried out either early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid exposure to direct sunlight. When making stops along the way, keep away from ignition sources and heat sources. When transporting by road, follow designated routes and refrain from stopping in residential areas or densely populated zones. When transporting by rail, sliding is strictly prohibited. Store in a cool, well‑ventilated warehouse, away from ignition sources and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30°C. This material must be stored separately from oxidizing agents and other incompatible substances; never store them together. Use explosion‑proof lighting and ventilation systems. The use of mechanical equipment or tools that are likely to generate sparks is prohibited. The storage area must be equipped with emergency spill‑control equipment.
