VI. Applications of Methane Gas
Methane is a highly important fuel and the primary component of natural gas, accounting for approximately 87%. At room temperature under standard atmospheric pressure, methane is colorless and odorless; the distinctive smell added to household natural gas is an artificial odor introduced for safety purposes, typically using methyl mercaptan or ethyl mercaptan. 7. Important Notes:
Transportation Precautions: When transporting in steel cylinders, be sure to securely fasten the safety caps on the cylinders. Cylinders should generally be laid flat with their valve outlets facing the same direction—never crossed—and must not exceed the height of the vehicle’s protective guardrails. Use triangular wooden chocks to secure the cylinders firmly and prevent them from rolling. The transport vehicle must be equipped with appropriate types and quantities of fire‑fighting equipment. The exhaust pipe of any vehicle used to transport this material must be fitted with a flame arrester, and the use of mechanical equipment or tools that are prone to sparking during loading and unloading is strictly prohibited. Mixing or transporting together with oxidizing agents is strictly forbidden. During summer, transport should be carried out either early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid exposure to direct sunlight. When making stops along the way, keep away from ignition sources and heat sources. When transporting by road, follow designated routes and refrain from stopping in residential areas or densely populated zones. When transporting by rail, sliding is strictly prohibited. Store in a cool, well‑ventilated warehouse, away from ignition sources and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30°C. This material must be stored separately from oxidizing agents and other incompatible substances; never store them together. Use explosion‑proof lighting and ventilation systems. The use of mechanical equipment or tools that are likely to generate sparks is prohibited. The storage area must be equipped with emergency spill‑control equipment.
