VI. Applications of Carbon Dioxide
1. High‑purity carbon dioxide is primarily used in the electronics industry as a feedstock for carbon dioxide lasers, a calibration gas for testing instruments, and a component in the preparation of other specialty gas mixtures; it is also employed as a regulator in polyethylene polymerization reactions.
2. Solid carbon dioxide is widely used for refrigerating dairy products, meat, frozen foods, and other perishable items during transportation. It also serves as a refrigerant in many industrial processes, such as crushing heat‑sensitive materials, polishing rubber, performing cryogenic treatment on metals, shrink‑fit assembly of mechanical components, and vacuum cold traps.
3. Gaseous carbon dioxide is used in the carbonation of soft drinks, pH control in water treatment processes, chemical processing, food preservation, inert shielding during chemical and food processing, welding gases, plant growth stimulants, as well as for hardening molds and cores in casting and for pneumatic devices.
4. Diluents for sterilizing gases (i.e., using a mixed gas of ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide as a sterilant, insecticide, and fumigant, widely applied to the fumigation of medical devices, packaging materials, clothing, fur, factories, cultural relics, and books).
5. Liquid carbon dioxide is used as a refrigerant, for low-temperature testing of aircraft, missiles, and electronic components, to enhance oil recovery in wells, for rubber polishing, and for controlling chemical reactions; it can also be used as a fire extinguishing agent.
6. Supercritical carbon dioxide can be used as a solvent for dissolving nonpolar, nonionic, and low‑molecular‑weight compounds, which is why it finds wide application in homogeneous reactions.
7. Important Notes:
1. Perform operations in a closed system. Ensure proper natural ventilation. Operators must undergo specialized training and strictly adhere to operating procedures to prevent gas leakage into the workplace air.
2. Keep away from flammable and combustible materials. Handle with care during transportation to prevent damage to cylinders and accessories. Equip with leak emergency response equipment.
3. Store in a cool, well‑ventilated warehouse away from ignition sources and heat. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30°C. It must be stored separately from flammable (or combustible) materials; mixing storage is strictly prohibited. The storage area should be equipped with leak emergency response equipment.
