Neon (Ne) is a colorless, odorless, non‑flammable rare gas. At room temperature, it exists as a gaseous inert gas that neither burns nor supports combustion. When subjected to low‑pressure discharge, it exhibits highly distinct emission lines in the red region of the spectrum. Neon is extremely unreactive—it does not burn and does not support combustion. Liquid neon boasts advantages such as a low boiling point and a relatively high latent heat of vaporization. Typically, neon is used in neon signs and as a filling medium in the electronics industry (for example, in high‑voltage neon lamps and counting tubes); it finds application in laser technology as a visible light indicator, for voltage regulation, and as a component in laser gas mixtures; neon–oxygen mixtures are used as respiratory gases in place of helium–oxygen; it serves as a cryogenic coolant, a standard gas, and a specialized gas mixture; and it is employed in high‑energy physics research, where neon is used to fill spark chambers for detecting particle trajectories.
